Britney Spears Challenges
The couple married in June 2022, just months after her conservatorship was ended in a Los Angeles court. Mr. Asghari is her third husband.
After a little more than a year of marriage, Britney Spears’ husband Sam Asghari, whom she married after being released from the conservatorship and that had controlled her life for more than ten years, filed for divorce on Wednesday, according to Los Angeles court records.
One of Ms. Spears’s first significant life decisions that became public after a judge ended the conservatorship that had controlled her personal life and money for more than 13 years was the couple’s marriage in California in June 2022. The singer had complained that the conservatorship was “abusive” and was keeping her from getting married and having more children in a tearful speech to a judge months earlier.
The couple split on July 28, according to the divorce petition, which was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. Irreconcilable conflicts were cited by Mr. Asghari as the basis for divorce.
Mathew Rosengart, a lawyer for Ms. Spears, declined to comment.
A review of how Ms. Spears’ trials and tribulations had been breathlessly covered more than 15 years earlier by glitzy magazines, supermarket tabloids, mainstream newspapers, and television shows was prompted by the legal dispute over her conservatorship, and some publications even apologized in front of the public. But even before the legal documents were submitted, rumors about her most recent divorce made headlines all over the world, raising concerns about how much had changed.
Mr. Asghari ,a third husband of Britney Spears
Mr. Asghari, a personal trainer, is Ms. Spears’ third husband. When she was 22 years old, her first marriage to childhood friend Jason Allan Alexander was dissolved after only a few days. After two years of marriage, she requested a divorce from Kevin Federline, her second husband and the father of her two children, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Ms. Spears and Mr. Asghari met in 2016, when he appeared in a music video for her single “Slumber Party,” the couple have said in interviews. Since then, the two have made regular appearances on each other’s social media accounts, with Ms. Spears’s famously personal Instagram featuring their home life and travels. Shortly before the couple were married, Ms. Spears revealed that she had experienced a miscarriage.
In 2008, the conservatorship was set up because of worries about her mental state. Even when she performed and made huge revenues as a well-known pop artist around the world, her father James P. Spears continued to exert control over her finances and personal life.
Many of her followers created the #FreeBritney movement, which helped bring attention to her issue, after hundreds of fans described the restrictive nature of the conservatorship in news reports and documentary films.
For the first time in public, Ms. Spears detailed her troubles with the conservatorship in 2021, when she complained to the judge presiding over her case that the situation had been “demoralizing” and claimed that she was forced into working against her will while under the influence of drugs. She claimed to have been “traumatized” and to simply desire her life back.
“I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” Ms. Spears told the court. “I was told right now in the conservatorship I am not able to get married or have a baby.”
Later that year, the judge suspended Mr. Spears from his position as overseer of his daughter’s estate; in November 2021, he issued a ruling ending the conservatorship.
TMZ was first to report the news of the couple’s divorce proceedings. In the court filing, Mr. Asghari noted that he would be seeking spousal support.
